Wardrobe Staple #4: The White Oxford Cloth Button Down

oxford cloth button down - jeans (old from eddie bauer) - shoes (old from dsw)
White shirts are so tricky to pull off! I feel like it's a fine line between cute and "about-to-be-a-waitress." But I think I finally have figured out how to wear this shirt for that "effortless" look. I see everyone recommending a white oxford cloth button down as a wardrobe staple, but it was so hard for me to think of how else to wear them. This one is from Uniqlo and I have it in a size S. I have another one of these shirts in a light blue, but in a size XS. It's shrunk now, and these days, I like to wear that one over dresses. I think Uniqlo has changed the cut of their oxford cloth shirts - my last one seemed a lot more fitted, whereas this one is cut a little straighter and looks boxier on me.

Today was a work from home day. I love working from home on days when I have work that requires the absolute maximum of my mental capacity. It's quiet and I don't need to spend any energy on getting out of bed. Confession - I stay in bed with my laptop until I absolutely need to get up, and only then will I brush my teeth and get ready. In the case of today, it was an afternoon pick-me-up at Starbucks, where I spent the rest of the day sitting outside and coding. It was an absolutely beautiful day in Chicago, especially after the storms that pulled through the Midwest the prior few days. I got absolutely SOAKED walking home from work yesterday.

In sports news - the Hawks play tomorrow. I was really hoping that it would be a 4 game sweep over Tampa Bay, but I guess not. How do they even have hockey in that climate?

  1. I do love mine! It's just too small to wear like a normal shirt, haha. I should replace it, but I'm lazy!

  2. I have the exact shirt! It's been in my closet for about two years now but I've probably only worn it about 5 times cause like you say they're so hard to style (it keeps looking like a school uniform on me). I bought it because a white shirt is in every single "basics you HAVE to own" list but obviously I didn't think it through! I think it might be too masculine a cut for me, I had to get an L to fit my shoulders but it's too baggy everywhere else. Sigh! Show us if you come up with any other ways to wear it!

    1. If it's the basic cotton one ($19.99ish?) it's hard to wear bc it gets so rumply (I should look into a steamer, but I'm lazy.)

Jane, what if you went Audrey Hepburn with it?

    2. Get a steamer! I love mine. And mine isn't rumply - it's the $29.90 one. It stays relatively straight. Do you maybe have the linen one?

I'm inspired to make this shirt work, damn it! I'll definitely share if I come up with any good ones.

    3. Haha you've in turn inspired ME to try and make the shirt work again!

Kristina - I do like the way that's styled on her, but I'm not sure if I could pull it off because I'm not small and dainty like Audrey (even though I usually try not to let body type stuff get in the way of dressing how I want to). I'll do some experimenting in front of the mirror when I get the time!
