Live Fast

sweater - old from Forever 21;  pants - old navy ; sandals - old navy
My outfit of the day today - a quick jaunt across down the street to grab coffee before returning home. It was a work from home day, and also pretty chilly as well, considering that it's July. I don't hate it! Because 9 out of 12 months in Chicago are considered "winter," my closet reflects that. I was thinking today that it's because of this that I feel like I'm in a style rut.

To be quite honest, I've taken photos for two other outfits this week that I did not post because I thought the outfit looked terrible on me. I think it revolves around really seeing what I look like in a full body shot. The whole exercise of taking outfit photos and posting them has really made me think about what I look like and what looks good on me.

I like this outfit because my legs look long, and my torso is proportionate. The more and more I think about this, the more I really want to buy some mid-rise or high waisted jeans. After posting my Quality over Quantity post, my initial inclination is to do some research and shopping around for nice jeans. I realize, I have no idea where to start. My mom only buys "designer" jeans, but having tried a pair on (AG brand) and feeling the material, I'm not the biggest fan. They felt more spandexy than cotton-y, and I think I really prefer a higher % of cotton in my jeans.

And then immediately I think to my favorite pair of jeans, which ironically are from Old Navy. I swear I'm not being sponsored. But they fit perfectly, they're comfortable, they don't stretch out, and they're durable. And they're a good price. Do you guys have any recos for some jeans? Not necessarily "designer," but good quality jeans. My dad swears by Levi's.

On a completely different note - I'm very proud of myself that I've made it this far in the 30 day writer challenge. Go me :)

  1. I've also had the experience of trying on some designer jeans and being shocked at how spandex-y and thin the fabric was. (The Rag and Bone skinny stretch jeans, which were very flattering otherwise, but I don't think I could spend that much money on a pair that's basically spandex.)

Alas, I haven't done enough experimenting with jeans shopping to have any recommendations!

    1. My mom lovess her designer jeans though. She's all for comfort and thinks that jeans with a high % of cotton are uncomfortable, haha.

  2. I love the color palette! And I completely agree about taking photos of outfits. I think the outfit looks great on me, even in the mirror, but on camera it's just no good. It does feel like I wasted my time after I try taking photos of an outfit, but I realize that it's just another good old learning experience!

Ahhh I really love your blog! I hope we can communicate more often ~

    1. Definitely! Thanks for visiting!

I have the mirror syndrome too, haha. But I think it's in part due to the camera angles being bad and making me look short, and in part due to my mirror being slightly tilted and making me look taller than I am.

  3. I'm fully convinced I have some sort of camera curse, I swear I look so much better in a mirror! Haha. When I'm choosing outfit photos though, I sort of try and break down why I don't think I look good... to be honest I've been trying to free myself from the idea that my body should look a certain way (e.g. the dress to "flatter" your shape mentality). If I like the style of an outfit, that's more important to me than whether or not my waist looks small or my legs look skinny, because I don't want to feed into what society keeps telling me women should look like. Then again, it's difficult because if you don't feel confident in an outfit it's not a good one!

As a risk of being totally cliche, my favourite jeans are the ultra stretch from UNIQLO, partly because they're so comfortable and partly cause they do free alterations!

    1. Ahh - they're opening a Uniqlo in Chicago soon. I used to balk at buying the jeans online because the inseams were so long - but I didn't know they did free alterations!

  4. +1 for Uniqlo Ultra Stretch if you just need a basic mid-rise skinny jean. I also have one of their Slim Fit/Boyfriend type deals that's been working out great so far.

Also seconding Pret's rec of Nordstrom Rack as a way to try many brands at one place. The only downside is they might not always have the wash or style you want, but at least you'll get a good feel for how a brand fits. A problem that I foresee for short people (I think you might be taller than me by a few) is baggy knees. I had an H&M pair meant for someone with longer legs than mine. The knees were off by two inches and when I'd wear boots the pant leg would bunch up and stack at the ankles and knees in a very odd way (despite hemming.)

    1. Definitely will check out Nordstrom and Uniqlo (in the Fall when they open a brick and mortar here!). I think I just need to do some research in stores and mull it over.

I always thought you were taller than me, actually. I'm 5'2. I've never had much luck with H&M jeans/pants :(

  5. Ooh, I'm really picky about back pocket design too. I like no designs or embroidery - just plain back pockets. I just don't like branding in general.

I'll definitely hit up Nordstrom Rack!
