Early Riser

Are you a morning person or a night owl? I work a very flexible schedule. It's not uncommon for me to roll into work around 9:30 and sadly, it's become a habit as I've changed jobs. My first job was one where it was common to get in around 8:30 and stay very late. And now I've ended up at one where it's so flexible that I frequently have the privilege to work from home. I have a much higher propensity to work late in the evening than to wake up early to do work.

I read a lot of articles on high achievers. The types of people that are A-players, hyper productive. You've probably read them too - the titles often look like "30 habits CEOs have" or "How successful people do more in 24 hours than the rest of us do in a week." These are just two examples, but a LOT of them have "Wake up early" listed. And I am so bad at that, even though I go to bed consistently at 11pm. I'd love to get up early, get a work out in, eat breakfast, and otherwise be productive. I just cannot get up when it's cold and dark out though! It's a much easier pill to swallow in the summers here.

Are any of you guys ex-night owls, turned morning people? Especially up further north in the winter where it's cold and dark? On the bright side though, the days are getting longer by 2 minutes every single day. I can see the sun still when I leave work!

  1. I usually got up around 7AM - 730AM for work days because I have a mundane work hours (9-5) but I still stay up until past midnight the night before. Im sure it's not good but I'm just so used to it. And during weekends, I will stay in bed until around 8AM - 830AM and went to bed even later. I just like staying up!

    1. I used to do that as well! Stay up really late and need to wake up early the next day. I've just seem to have fallen out of the habit of doing so and now have built up this requirement for 8 hours of sleep :(

  2. Incremental changes. I am a morning person but I'm not that great at preparing beforehand. So I'd make or bring breakfast but forget to carry it into the car, or I'd get to work hungry and have to leave in the middle of the day to buy food. Things like that waste time when all I need to do is be more conscientious about preparing all these items the night before.

For me, starting an activity like running helped motivate me get up on those early mornings. Now my favorite thing to do on a Saturday is get a long run in before it gets too hot and eat a massive breakfast/have a coffee fest after. Hope you figure out a routine that works for you and that you feel more productive soon!

    1. Ahh, I dream of living in your climate one day! The sun rises around 7am in my parts, and it's STILL pretty dark since it's so cloudy all the time. Not very motivating :( But definitely going to take your incrementality to heart! That is also how I've built up my endurance for running!
