The Weekender Bag

Does anyone else attach a lot of sentiment to a bag? For me, usually, no. But in the case of my weekender bag, absolutely yes. There's a lot of milage in this bag, whether it's a trip to Seattle, a short trip to my Alma Mater downstate for homecoming, or back to my parents' house for a little weekend retreat. It reminds me of winter time when I'm coming back home to family, and summer time for vacations.

My weekender bag is the Lo & Sons Catalina bag. When I was searching for a bag, I had a couple criteria. Lightweight, had a zipper, large but not too large, durable fabric, non-descript. Very utilitarian. Leather was out, since it was much too heavy. I landed on this mainly due to the bottom zip compartment where I can keep dirty laundry and shoes. It's also quite squishy, since it's made of canvas, which makes it very easy to stuff in overhead compartments on the train/airplane or my closet for storage.

I've had it for about 2 years now - bought right when I entered the workforce and suddenly had income to travel a bit.  It's held up quite well and continues to look brand new.

  2. Just curious: Does the Catalina fit under the seat in front of you on airplanes? It looks too large to do so from this photo...

    1. It depends on how much you put in it. It's very squishy, since it's canvas. I definitely could've put what I had packed in the above picture under the seat in front of me on the plane. But fully packed, with like, a laptop in there? Probably best to stow it in the overhead. It takes up less room than a traditional rolling carry on.

  3. Lo & Sons! I considered getting one of their OMG bags for similar travel purposes and to use as a office/gym bag, though I ended up having to send it back because it wasn't a good size for day-to-day use with me.

I thought the Catalina was very nice from browsing their website, though I personally already fill the weekender-ish bag niche with a Longchamp tote because nylon is so light and also waterproof. Those totes probably fit less stuff than the Catalina, though I've still found it to be spacious enough for most weekend trips. It sounds like the Catalina is more durable than a Longchamp though (my tote had tiny holes worn into the corner within a few months).

    1. I definitely also considered their OMG bag, but decided against it since I usually use a backpack for work, or my Longchamp Le Pliage. For short stayovers at my parents house (1-2 days), I prefer my backpack + my Longchamp. And for longer weekends (3-5+) I defer to the Catalina.

On a side note though - apparently Longchamp will fix those holes in the corner for free! I've never done it. I bought mine at Nordstrom, and I think you're just supposed to bring it in and ask about it? It's on my very long to-do prioritized way at the bottom, haha.
